After weeks of use I'm convinced this is a sound defensive design. Air attacks are encouraged from the south by the air sweeper and fail spectacularly when attempted. Ground assaults get ninjag up well short of getting enough resources to justify their attacks. DE is well protected enough that it is almost never touched.
